Experimental Investigation of Peak Wind Loads on Heliostat in Heliostat Field of University of Engineering and Technology KSK Campus

ABSTRACT:
Renewable energy resources and Concentrating solar thermal (CST) power tower (PT) are becoming a game changer in the felid of cheap and clean source of energy however there are some limitations. This study investigates the dependence of peak wind load coefficients on a heliostat in the atmosphere, so that the design, the size and cost of heliostats, can be further optimized for better results. A dual axis heliostats of area 1m2whichutilize stepper motors attached to worm gears for its movements along the axis and works on azimuth-elevation drives. Solar tracking would be done by a micro-controller. This would be done in a heliostat field in University of Engineering and Technology KSK Campus. When azimuth angle ??= 0° then in this condition the largest wind loads will occur. The angle of elevation increases when peak drag coefficients increases of the mirror (??> 0°) to a maximum in the normal position (??= 90°). When we increase angle ??, then peak drag loads were more significant then mean drag loads with the effect of increasing turbulence intensity ????. The wind loads on a heliostat reduced up to 40% when the ratio of elevation axis height to chord length of the heliostat mirror, ??/??, was less than 0.5. If we optimize the wind loads on isolated heliostats in operation and positions to the characteristics of the turbulence can reduce the cost of making heliostat components.
